SDF joins peacekeeping drill in Mongolia www.nhk.or.jp
About 1,000 troops from 26 countries are taking part in a peacekeeping exercise in Mongolia.
The participants include members of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force and US, British and Chinese troops.
Forty members of the Self-Defense Force took part in a civilian protection drill with US Marines on Saturday.
They encountered militants who were trying to abduct 2 children. The US Marines returned fire and rescued them.
Under national security legislation that took effect last year in Japan, members of the Self-Defense Forces are allowed to come to the aid of civilians, but so far they haven't faced that sort of situation.
In Saturday's exercise, the SDF members held rifles as they kept watch behind the Marines.
The Ground Self-Defense Force officer in charge of the drill, Michihiko Yufune, said the SDF can acquire knowledge and skills by taking part in exercises with countries that have experience in international peacekeeping operations.
