Border guards actively participating in conservation www.mongolia.panda.org

WWF-Mongolia has been implementing the 'Border Green Zone' initiative since 2021. As part of the initiative, targeted awareness activities are being organized annually.
According to the Law on Border, a green zone is an area designated up to 15 kilometers from the state border line, regulated under special provisions. The primary objective of this designation is to protect the region’s biodiversity through coordinated efforts with the military frontier units stationed in these areas. Therefore, building environmental awareness and understanding of biodiversity among border personnel is a crucial component of this initiative. As part of this initiative, WWF-Mongolia, in collaboration with the border unit in Dadal soum, Khentii province, successfully implemented the “Value of green zone in the border area” event. This year’s event was particularly noteworthy. It concluded a themed competition “Border Guards – Nature Protector,” which was aimed at engaging border soldiers in conservation efforts. The event also promoted the importance of Protected Areas.
During the month-long campaign, border troops carried out a variety of conservation activities. For example, each border post of the participating unit adopted a conservation value. In addition, every unit actively participated in tree planting. Patroling and inspections were also conducted along the border to prevent violations and environmental crimes.
Collaboration is essential in conservation work. The border troops have expanded the network of volunteer rangers and helped involve locals  in conservation activities. During the awareness campaign, a photo exhibition was organized to showcase the value of the “Border Green Zone.” Short videos created by the border guards were also presented to the public.
Participants emphasized that the growing enthusiasm and initiative of border guards in conservation efforts year after year is a direct result of the “Border Green Zone” initiative.
