12,600 Riders Participate in “World Horse Day” to Promote the Value of Mongolian Horses Globally www.montsame.mn
Initiated by President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, the resolution proclaiming “World Horse Day” was adopted at the plenary session of the 79th United Nations General Assembly on June 3, 2025, with 56 UN member states co-sponsoring the resolution.
Within this framework, the Government of Mongolia issued Resolution No. 100 in 2026, officially designating July 13 of every year as "World Horse Day." Marking the inaugural "World Horse Day" this year, a "Parade of Ten Thousand Horses," the President of Mongolia’s Cup international horse race, a national wrestling tournament, and various competitions, arts, and cultural events promoting equine heritage and culture took place at Khui Doloo Khudag.
Under the initiative of the President, and in dedication to the 820th anniversary of the Great Mongol Empire, 12,600 riders paraded, organized into the ancient Mongolian military formation of hundreds (Zuut). In addition to representatives from various sectors across Mongolia, participants of the renowned reality competition "Physical: Asia" were specially invited to join the Parade of Ten Thousand Horses. Organizers highlighted that their participation further elevated the international significance of "World Horse Day."
The significance of "World Horse Day" lies in globally promoting the value and genetic heritage of the Mongolian horse, disseminating nomadic civilization and traditional knowledge, and developing equestrian sports and tourism. Of the more than 50 million horses worldwide, over 10 percent, or approximately 5 million, are in Mongolia. Mongolia leads the world in the number of horses per capita.
