Ankhbayar Nyamdorj, Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations, attended and delivered a statement at the High-Level Meeting Commemorating the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, held in New York on September 29 during the General Debate of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly.
In his statement, Permanent Representative Ankhbayar emphasized the importance of resolute efforts toward nuclear disarmament amid today's deteriorating international security environment, intensifying strategic competition, and declining mutual trust.
Furthermore, he noted that nuclear-weapon-free zones represent tangible outcomes of state cooperation, legally binding commitments, and confidence-building measures. He commended the Group of Governmental Experts, established pursuant to UN General Assembly Resolution 79/241, for completing its comprehensive study on nuclear-weapon-free zones this year, while highlighting Mongolia's contribution to the process and drawing on its experience with its nuclear-weapon-free status.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly Khalilur Rahman, and representatives from nearly 100 member and observer states attended the high-level meeting, which expressed their positions on advancing the objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed September 26 as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons through Resolution 68/32 adopted in 2013, and has celebrated it annually since 2014. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the day aims to raise public awareness and understanding of the threat nuclear weapons pose to humanity and the imperative need for their total elimination.
