The General Manager of Ulaanbaatar City and Head of Working Group of the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar and Governor of the Capital City’s Office, G. Batzorig, met with consultants of the World Bank Water Team, James Tay and Gang Qin, to exchange views on the “Groundwater and Flood Protection” Project on August 7, 2025.
Currently, Ulaanbaatar City has 51.6 km of flood protection embankments in four locations and 107.6 km of protective channels in 58 locations. Most of these facilities have reached the end of their operational lifespan, deteriorated, and suffered damage to their embankment reinforcements, rendering them unable to mitigate large-scale flooding. Therefore, the “Groundwater and Flood Protection” project will be implemented to gradually enhance protection capacity in flood-prone areas. Under the project, a total of 102 km of new embankments will be constructed in 22 locations of the capital, along with four new reservoirs.
The World Bank is supporting the project’s consulting services and collaborating on the preparation of a feasibility study for the construction of 102 km of flood protection embankments in nine locations of the capital, as well as the rehabilitation of 40 km of sewer networks.
As a result of the Project, comprehensive and sustainable solutions will be implemented to ensure a healthy and safe living environment for city residents, reduce disaster risks, and integrate urban development, green space expansion, and smart water resource management.
