Solar Power Plant to Be Built in the Western Region www.montsame.mn
Under the “Upscaling Renewable Energy Sector Project” implemented by the Ministry of Energy with financing from the Asian Development Bank, a contract has been signed on a turnkey basis with China’s Zhongtian Photovoltaic Technology and Jiangsu Zhongtian Technology companies to construct a 19.8 MW solar power plant with an 8 MWh battery energy storage system in Myangad soum of Khovd aimag.
The selected contractor is one of China’s leading enterprises, operating in numerous countries with more than 80 subsidiaries and approximately 16,000 employees. The company also has prior experience in Mongolia, having served as the contractor for the country’s first large-scale battery energy storage project. This project will be financed through a loan from the Asian Development Bank and a grant from the Climate Investment Funds, with 40 percent of the total financing provided through the grant component via the ADB, underscoring its significance. The Ministry of Energy and the Project Implementation Unit will oversee the project, and the plant is scheduled to be commissioned within 300 days.
This marks the fifth energy source being developed by the Ministry of Energy in the western region under the renewable energy expansion project. The Myangad solar power plant is expected to generate 39.3 million kWh of electricity annually, reduce imports by approximately 17 percent, and save around USD 2.0 million each year. It will also cut greenhouse gas emissions by 34,600 tonnes annually. During the construction phase, more than 150 temporary jobs will be created, with 14 permanent positions to be established upon completion.
