On-Site Inspection Underway Following Rockfall Accident at Oyu Tolgoi Underground Mine www.montsame.mn

The Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources has issued a statement following a rockfall accident at the underground mine of Oyu Tolgoi LLC, located in Khanbogd soum, Umnugobi aimag.

According to the ministry, seismic event occurred at approximately 6:00 p.m. on the 29th of this month at the underground mine operating under Mining License No. MV-006709. The seismic event resulted in a rockfall in the development workings at the +1300 production level of the underground mine, affecting 15 employees who were working in the affected seismic zone.

Immediately following the incident, Oyu Tolgoi's mine rescue team took prompt action in accordance with Mongolia's occupational safety laws, regulations, and procedures. All personnel working underground were evacuated. Emergency medical assistance was provided to the affected employees, whose health conditions are being monitored. Some workers have been transported to Ulaanbaatar to receive medical treatment, according to information received by the ministry.

The Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources is receiving regular updates on the incident and providing the necessary professional guidance and recommendations.

Furthermore, a working group comprising representatives of the Ministry, the Mineral Resources and Petroleum Authority, and the Mineral Resources Professional Council has been established to investigate the causes of the accident, determine the circumstances, and prepare an assessment. The working group is conducting inspections at the site.

The ministry has also called on mines, industrial facilities, and engineering and technical personnel operating in the mineral resources sector to implement Mongolia's laws and regulations, official directives issued by the Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, and recommendations from the sector's Chief Inspector General. These measures aim to ensure stable production, prevent potential accidents, and continuously improve occupational health and safety systems.

"The most valuable resource of the mineral resources sector is its miners," the ministry stated.
