The International Sumo Federation held its regular congress during the World Sumo Championships for amateurs in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, electing Hakuho Davaajargal Munkhbat, the 69th grand champion (yokozuna) of professional sumo, as its President.
He will also serve as President of the Asian Sumo Federation.
“I am extremely happy to have been entrusted with this responsibility. I will continue the work of former President Akio Toyoda and strive to promote and develop sumo around the world. I will dedicate myself fully to this mission,” Hakuho said.
He added that he had met with presidents of national Olympic committees from several countries during the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. He also said he would work with Senegal’s National Olympic Committee to introduce and promote sumo in African countries.
“We believe we have moved one step closer to including sumo in the program of the 2030 Asian Games in Qatar,” he said.
Just days ago, sumo was featured as a demonstration sport at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Hakuho introduced and promoted the sport to athletes, officials, and other visitors attending the Games. He also reiterated his ambition to have sumo included in the Olympic Games program.
