Mongolia’s newborn baby numbers fall by 3.9 percent www.news.mn
In recent years, Mongolia has seen a decline in the number of births compared with previous years. According to official data released by the National Statistics Office, 38,829 women gave birth and 39,149 babies were born nationwide in the first nine months of this year. Compared with the same period last year, the number of mothers who gave birth decreased by 3.9 percent, or 1,596 women, while the number of newborn babies fell by 3.9 percent, or 1,584 babies.
The birth rate per 1,000 people also decreased by 0.4 percent compared with the same period last year. By region, the birth rate per 1,000 people was 0.3-4.8 percent higher than the national average in Ulaanbaatar and the provinces of Bayan-Ulgii, Khovd, Orkhon, Govisumber, Darkhan-Uul and Uvs. Meanwhile, it was 1.0-6.6 percent lower in other provinces.
Experts explain that the decline in births among people of reproductive age is linked to the fact that more young people of working age are focusing on their careers and education rather than starting families. At the same time, health organizations continue to warn about the growing number of unintended pregnancies among secondary school students. In particular, cases of childbirth and abortions among children aged 12 and above are being recorded every year, raising concerns about the need to improve sexual education among teenagers.
In addition to the decline in births, statistics also show an increase in the number of deaths.
During the same period, 13,331 people died nationwide, an increase of 1.3 percent, or 168 people, compared with the same period last year. The death rate per 1,000 people was 0.1-0.4 higher than the national average in Ulaanbaatar and the provinces of Bulgan, Arkhangai, Selenge, Uvurkhangai, Khuvsgul, Dornogovi and Tuv. It was 0.1-0.8 lower in other provinces except Govisumber, Darkhan-Uul and Dundgovi.
