Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Daily revenue of public transport companies has doubled as a result of recent policy change concerning mandatory use of ‘Umoney' smart cards when taking buses and trolleybuses in Ulaanbaatar, reports Mayor’s Office.
More than a year ago, public transportation system in Ulaanbaatar introduced smart cards; however, bus-takers were able to pay bus fare in either cash or card form until April 1.
Relevant studies showed that about 70 percent of bus-takers in Ulaanbaatar made cash payments which translated as 23 percent revenue decrease for the public transport sector as some people managed to deceive bus drivers and not make full payment which is MNT 500. Therefore, the capital city authority took such measure.
“We are looking at different opportunities to enable bus fare payment with all kinds of cards such as bank cards and others”, said Mayor S.Batbold.
In regard to citizens’ complaints about lack of smart card recharge stations, he responded that there are over 520 stations operating in Ulaanbaatar, and also that the authority is taking measures directed at increasing the number.
