On June 20, President of Mongolia Kh.Battulga and Minister of Education and Science L.Enkh-Amgalan became acquainted with the construction progress of the sports complex being built in the capital city’s Khan-Uul district.
More specifically, they became acquainted with the construction of the Winter Sports Complex project being implemented by ‘Steppe Arena’ LLC as well as the sports complex building, where the 2023 Ulaanbaatar East Asian Youth Games and the International Youth Green Games will take place.
In the framework of the projects, construction is underway for a complex consisting of an indoor sports venue with a capacity of 3,500 spectators, a sports complex suited for organizing various sports competitions with a capacity of 2,100 spectators, an aquatics stadium with 10 lanes, a football field, and a technical center.
Despite a slight postponement due to the pandemic, construction works are taking place as normally, introduced the project implementing body.
With the implementation of the aforementioned projects, it becomes possible for Mongolia to hold various international sports tournaments on the regional, continental, and world level. This also creates the opportunity for national sports teams to further enhance their strength and skills, alongside laying out the foundation for developing winter sports in the country.
As youth representatives have also put forth requests for the government to support the sports sector through policy, and establish appropriate corresponding venues and environment for such sports, President Kh.Battulga noted the importance of successfully implementing the projects and requested Minister of Education and Science L.Enkh-Amgalan to provide policy support.
Main construction work completed for Mongolia’s first indoor winter sports venue
The foundation-laying ceremony for the Winter Sports Palace took place on April 14, 2019, with the attendance of President Kh.Battulga. It is the first of such venues that meet the standards of the International Olympic Committee.
Funded independently through the financing of domestic entities, the main construction of the venue has been completed, with interior works and the making of the ice rink underway.
Alongside an Olympic-sized ice rink with a ratio of 60x30 meters, the venue will have over 10 rooms and areas to be used during tournaments and competitions, which includes changing rooms for athletes and referees, a media press area, and a first aid room.
With the establishment of a winter sports palace, it not only lays the foundation to develop winter sports such as professional hockey and figure skating, but also becomes possible to use the venue for various sports competitions, concerts and performances, and conferences.
The project is planned to be completed in July 2021.
