The President of Mongolia, U. Khurelsukh, had a telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine, V. O. Zelensky, on February 21, 2023, at his request.
The President of Ukraine V. O. Zelensky congratulated the people of Mongolia on the Lunar New Year, thanked Mongolia for its humanitarian aid to Ukraine in difficult times, and emphasized that he was satisfied with bilateral relations. He recalled his childhood in Mongolia.
The President of Mongolia, U. Khurelsukh, took the time to talk on the phone and expressed his gratitude to the people of Mongolia for their New Year's greetings. He also expressed concern about the situation in Ukraine and emphasized that the international community should intensify diplomatic activities and solve the problem through dialogue and peace.
He also noted that Mongolia aims to develop balanced relations and cooperation with both neighboring countries and third neighboring countries, and it consistently implements a peace-oriented, open, independent and multi-pillar foreign policy.

Senior diplomat calls for closer China-Mongolia coordination www.xinhuanet.com

MUNICH, Germany -- Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, on Friday called for closer China-Mongolia coordination and cooperation on international and regional affairs.
China and Mongolia, as neighbors, should strengthen exchanges and cooperation, Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, told Mongolian Foreign Minister Batmunkh Battsetseg during a brief meeting on the sidelines of the 59th Munich Security Conference.
Battsetseg said that she looked forward to maintaining the momentum of high-level bilateral exchanges this year and expanding mutually beneficial cooperation with China.

Odkhuu wins gold for Mongolia at Tel Aviv Judo Grand Slam www.xinhuanet.com

JERUSALEM, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia's Tsetsentsengel Odkhuu won the gold medal on the third and final day of the international Tel Aviv Judo Grand Slam in the Israeli coastal city on Saturday.
Tsetsentsengel grabbed the men's +100kg category title after defeating Ushangi Kokauri of Azerbaijan in the final.
Zelym Kotsoiev of Azerbaijan won the men's -100kg title after defeating Dutch European champion Michael Korrel by an ippon in the final.
Beka Gviniashvili won a second gold medal for Georgia in the competition after defeating Olympic bronze medalist Krisztian Toth of Hungary in the men's -90kg category.
The gold in the women's -78kg category went to Italy's Alice Bellandi who overcame French Olympic silver medalist Madeleine Malonga, while Israel's Raz Hershko won the +78kg category thanks to a win over Kayra Sayit of Türkiye.

Monthly Average Household Income Increases by 12.4% www.montsame.mn

According to the National Statistics Office of Mongolia, in January 2023, the consumer price index at the national level increased by 1.2% from the previous month and by 12.3% from the same period of the last year. It includes:
Food and non-alcoholic beverages group - 14.0% increase in prices
Alcoholic beverages - 8.7% increase in prices
Clothing, cloth, and footwear group - 15.6% increase in prices.
Ten products that mainly caused the increase in consumer prices is explaining the 25.9 percent of the total inflation. It includes the price increase of bread, flour, and rice by 32.4 percent and gasoline by 15.5 percent.
Balance of Payment
In 2022, by preliminary results, the balance of payment was in deficit of USD 727.2 million and increased by USD 505.6 million compared to the previous year. In 2022, by preliminary results, the current account balance of payment was in deficit of USD 2.9 billion and increased by USD 767.3 (36.4%) million compared to the previous year.
This deficit in the current account was mainly due to the following reasons:
Increase in the deficit of USD 263.2 million in trade in goods and
Increase in the deficit of USD 661.6 million in the trade-in service.
Household Income and Expenditure
According to the Household Socio-Economic Survey result in the fourth quarter of 2022, the monthly average household income was MNT 1.8 million, which increased by MNT 204.1 (12.4%) thousand compared to the same period of the previous year.
In the fourth quarter of 2022, the average monthly real income (price changes adjusted) reached 1.2 million MNT, decreased by MNT 8.4 (0.7%) thousand compared to the same period of the previous year and decreased by MNT 20.4 (1.7%) thousand compared to the previous quarter.
The 0.7% decrease from the same period of the previous year mainly resulted from MNT 51.1 (15.7%) thousand decline in real income from pensions and allowances. The monthly average household monetary expenditure reached MNT 1.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2022, which increased by MNT 356.4 (25.3%) thousand compared to the same period of the previous year. The monthly average household real expenditure (price changes adjusted) in the fourth quarter of 2022 was MNT 1.2 million, increased by MNT 92.5 (8.6%) thousand compared to the same period of the previous year.

Gender imbalance in Mongolian herding households www.news.mn

Herding in Mongolia is often seen as “male” activity, with men much more often defined as the “main herder” in household surveys. But over 80 percent of women in herding households report participating in animal husbandry activities, reporting about two-thirds as many minutes per day as men.
Mongolians usually demand their male offspring to help them with herding, while they send their daughters to school. Therefore, Mongolian women are generally better educated than Mongolian men, having an average of 11 years of schooling compared to 10 years for men. Rural women have relatively low levels of education (about a quarter of have completed high school), even if they have more education than rural men.
The resulting gender imbalance is clear. In 2021, 1.6 times more women than men were enrolled in Mongolia’s universities. After becoming highly educated and accustomed to city life, many are reluctant to return to the isolation, hard work and unpredictable income of a nomadic, rural life. Consequently, it has become harder for herder men to find wives, and researchers have begun raising concerns about the long-term impact of this bride shortage on Mongolia’s traditional values and agricultural sector.

Booming business returns to China-Mongolia border areas www.xinhuanet.com

HOHHOT, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- With unbridled excitement, Ulantuya, who hails from Mongolia, indulged in a shopping spree at a bustling mall in Erenhot, a major city on the China-Mongolia border.
"There is a great variety of products here. I will surely take many of them home," said Ulantuya, surrounded by a swarm of Mongolian merchants and customers.
Border cities like Erenhot have seen booming business and greater people-to-people exchanges since cross-border travel resumed between China and its neighbors on Jan. 8, as part of the country's optimized COVID-19 response.
Zhang Yuan, who has been running a leather goods shop at the mall for 12 years, was delighted to have Mongolian merchants back. "As I reconnected with old friends, warm greetings were exchanged, and our handshakes lingered just a tad longer than usual," Zhang said.
Statistics from the commerce department of China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region showed the Erenhot highway port has recorded a daily average of about 600 passenger trips since Jan. 8. The port also handled 1.42 million tonnes of cargo in January, up 98.2 percent year on year.
Ceke Port, located in Alxa League in Inner Mongolia, is an important cross-border channel for mineral products transportation.
At a worksite in Ceke, Mongolian containers brimming with coal were hoisted onto waiting trucks before being shipped to various corners of China.
According to the regional department of commerce, inbound and outbound cargo volume at Ceke Port increased by 105,000 tonnes in January compared with December.
In Ganqmod Port, the largest highway port on the China-Mongolia border, trucks loaded with copper powder, coal and other mineral products were seen lining up to enter China.
With an impressive five-fold surge in the volume of goods handled since the start of 2023, cross-border trade is off to a roaring start at the bustling port, said Hecheltu, deputy director of the management committee of the Ganqmod Port.
Boldoo, a truck driver from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, has transported mineral products between China and Mongolia for eight years, mainly via Ganqmod Port.
"The port has seen an increasing number of trucks coming from Mongolia over the past month," said Boldoo. "I now earn 6,000 yuan (about 876.6 U.S. dollars) a month by making two trips every week. My family's life has greatly improved since I began this job."
