State prize - winning film to open Naadam Festival www.montsame.mn

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ State Prize Laureate, State Honored Cultural Figure E.Choidog’s film score for 1961 documentary ‘Exquisite Mongolia’ will resound at the opening ceremony of traditional Naadam festival this year.

On June 20, Tuesday, German Ambassador Stefan Duppel handed over a copy of the original partitur which is kept in the archive of German DEFA studio to Deputy Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh.

First recorded in the DEFA studio in 1961, the original partitur wasn’t stored in Mongolian musical repertoire.

Different breeds of sheep to be raised in Mongolia www.montsame.mn

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ With an aim to improve sheep quality, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry has brought in 657 sheep of Suffolk, Berrichon, Romanov and Merino breeds.

These high-grade sheep will be used in Mongolian agriculture in accordance with the breeding strategy and policy. “Taishir-Urguu” LLC was selected as the first one to use them for breeding. The offspring of these sheep will be provided by order to private entities engaged in meat and wool production.

Romanov breed: The ewe produces twins with almost each birth. Therefore, Romanov is highly convenient for mass producing muttons. Due to its high reproduction rate, sheep farmers breed Romanov sheep with Suffolk breed sheep. As a result, lambs in spring weight around 60 kg. This requires 4 months of pasture and 2 months of feedings.

Suffolk breed: Suffolk breed ram have average weight of 120-140 kilograms, while the ewes have 70-90 kilograms. A 6-month-old lambs weight equal to 3-year-old Mongolian sheep. Also, these sheep yield 4-5 kilograms of wool.

Merino breed: With an average weight of 130 kilograms for ram and 80 kilograms for ewe, these sheep yield 4.5 to 6.6 kilograms of wool.

Berricon du Cher: A hundred ewes of Berricon du Cher sheep produce around 160-180 lambs in average. Although the number is less than Romanov breed, this breed is highly convenient for breeding. The meats of Berricon du Cher are considered high-quality among other breeds and rams weight 100-140 kilograms, while ewes weight 60-70 kilograms. These sheep grow around 341 kilograms of wool per day and yield 4.5 kilograms of wool.

Rio Tinto in search of next Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia www.mining.com

Mining giant Rio Tinto (LON:RIO) and its Canadian affiliate Turquoise Hill (TSX:TRQ) are once again exploring Mongolia’s metals-rich Gobi desert, following the country’s renewed efforts to attract foreign investment.

Last month, the landlocked country bordering China and Russia decided to open more than one-fifth of its territory for mining exploration, hoping to shore up its finances following an International Monetary Fund-led bailout.

Since mining accounts for around 25% of Mongolia’s GDP and more than 80%of exports, experts believe that increasing mining exploration could potentially raise the Asian nation’s GDP and economic security.

Mongolia also revoked a controversial banking law that would have required companies including Rio Tinto — the country’s biggest investor — to funnel all sales revenues from foreign investment projects through local banks and proposed the wider exploration area.

"I can confirm that we have an exploration drilling programme in licenses outside of the Oyu Tolgoi licenses," Turquoise Hill spokesperson Tony Shaffer told Reuters Tuesday. The Rio-controlled firm holds a 66% stake in the Oyu Tolgoi project. The Mongolian government owns the rest.

While Oyu Tolgoi is the country's highest profile mining operation, Mongolia hosts a number of other copper, gold and coal mines and projects, including Canada’s Erdene Resource Development (TSX:ERD), the company that literally struck gold earlier this year after finding its new gold project was richer than previously thought.

Australian explorer Xanadu Mines (ASX:XAM) is also among the established companies in Mongolia, with its underway Kharmagtai copper-gold project, south-east of Ulaanbaatar, returning exceptional results in the first months of this year.

Ford to move US production of Focus to China www.bbc.com

Ford is to move US production of its new Ford Focus car to China in 2019, despite having faced pressure to keep manufacturing jobs in America.
The carmaker said the decision would not lead to layoffs in the US.
But the move marks another change to its plans for producing the new Focus.
The firm in January scrapped plans to move US production to a new $1.6bn (£1.3bn) plant in Mexico after criticism from Donald Trump.
Currently, Ford makes its Focus cars in Michigan, Germany and in China.
But it has seen sales of the model fall in the US, while demand for larger vehicles remains.
It was planning to move US production of the Focus to a new factory near San Luis Potosi in Mexico.
That decision drew fierce criticism from the US president, who has routinely blasted car makers and other companies for importing goods from other countries, including China and Mexico.
In January, Ford said it would abandon the new factory and move production to an existing plant in Hermosillo, Mexico instead. At the time, the company said it would use the savings to invest at a different plant in Michigan working on electric cars.
But Tuesday's announcement means Ford will make the new Focus in China, instead of Hermosillo - producing $500m in savings.
The move to China will not affect employment levels in Hermosillo, which produces other models, said spokeswoman Kelli Felker. It also does not affect the plans for the additional investment in Michigan, she said.
The Michigan plant currently producing the Focus will switch to making trucks in 2018, with the same number of hourly workers, the firm said.
Ford also said it would invest $900m to retool an SUV plant in Kentucky.
Ford updated the White House about its new plans on Tuesday, Ms Felker said. She said the firm had been considering the move for some time.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer on Tuesday said Ford's plans - which could have a large impact on US parts suppliers - underscored the need for tax reform, to help make domestic manufacturing more competitive.
New leadership
The investments are some of the first announced under new leadership at Ford.
The company named Jim Hackett as the new chief executive in May after pressure from shareholders to improve the firm's performance.
Joe Hinrichs, an executive vice president at Ford, said the savings from the move to China would allow the firm to invest in parts of the business that are growing, such as SUVs, electric cars and other areas.
"Finding a more cost-effective way to deliver the next Focus program in North America is a better plan, allowing us to redeploy the money we save into areas of growth for the company," he said.
Ford sold about 67,150 Focus cars in the US in the first five months of 2017, down almost 20% from 2016.

New transit service across Mongolia and Slovakia www.railwaypro.com

TransContainer, Far East Land Bridge (FELB) and RZD Logistics have successfully introduced a new transit container service from China to Hungary across the territory of Mongolia, Russia, Ukraine and Slovakia.

The first freight train, which consisted of 41 40-foot containers with clothes, electronics and various equipment, departed from Changsha (Hunan province) on 27 May and arrived in Budapest (Hungary) on 15 June. Customs clearance of goods, phyto-measures, as well as cargo transshipment to a narrow gauge were fulfilled at TransContainer terminal in Dobra (Slovakia). The overall transit time across the territory of countries with track gauge of 1520 mm was 13 days.
FELB operated the service, RZD Logistics forwarded the freight across Russia and TransContainer provided the rolling stock, equipment and terminal service for cargo processing. ZSSK Cargo – the subsidiary company of Železnice Slovenskej republiky – became the project’s partner.
“We believe that clients who need to deliver cargo to Central and South Europe will be especially interested in this service. The successful experience of transportation across this route allowed to reduce the transit time by several days, whereas due to our own capacities in Dobra customs processing and transshipment to European track gauge are fulfilled in much shorter time”, Sales and Business Development Director of PJSC TransContainer Alexander Podylov, said.

Czech CASA plane to take Przewalski's horses to Mongolia again www.praguemonitor.com

Prague, June 19 (CTK) - A Czech military CASA aircraft with four mares of the Przewalski's horse aboard left this afternoon for Mongolia where they will be returned to the wild after a 20-hour 6000-km flight over two continents with stop-overs in Kazan and Novosibirsk, both Russia.

This has been a seventh such transport of animals in which military pilots train long-distance flights and landing on an unpaved ground.

Jaromir Sebesta, commander of the Czech air force, said the military CASA aircraft is not destined for long flights, but it offers sufficient comfort to the animals.

One of the four mares travelling to Mongolia is Saranqua, which was born in the Prague Zoological Garden as the 222nd young of the Przewalski's horse.

Two other mares come from German zoos and the fourth from Denmark.

Twenty-two mares and one stallion have been transported from Prague to Mongolia by a military plane since 2011. The project is financed from a fund to which Prague Zoo visitors contribute with two crowns per entrance ticket.

Twenty-five years will pass since the launch of the project of returning the Przewalski's horses into their natural habitat this year.

Prague Zoo director Miroslav Bobek says the salvation project is successful and that the horses reproduce in Mongolia.

The first transport to Mongolia was carried out in June 1992. Since 2011, the Prague Zoo has organised transports to western Mongolia independently. It has returned 27 animals to their original environment, including 23 from the Czech Republic and four within Mongolia.

This autumn or next spring, the Prague Zoo will take Przewalski's horses to China, but not in cooperation with the military.
