Extreme cold winter freezes Mongolia www.xinhuanet.com

At least 10 Mongolian provinces were experiencing the extreme wintry weather, known as "dzud," the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring said on Monday.
"Currently, at least 23 soums in 10 provinces of the country are experiencing dzud, and 41 soums in 13 provinces are facing near-dzud conditions," the agency said.
Over 60 percent of the nomadic country's territory has been covered with snow of up to 30 cm thick, it said.
Dzud is a Mongolian term to describe a severely cold winter when a large number of livestock die because the ground is frozen or covered by snow.
Some 366,000 head of livestock have been killed this year due to the harsh winter and other reasons, according to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry.

Guam upend Mongolia before electric crowd, Thailand dominant anew in Pre-Qualifiers' closer www.fiba.basketball

Earnest Ross Jr. hushed the electric crowd as he towed Guam past Mongolia, 82-81, in a thrilling conclusion to the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Pre-Qualifiers' Second Round, Sunday night at the UG Arena in Ulaanbaatar.
Ross fired a cold-blooded pull-up triple right in the face of Sanchir Tungalag for the go-ahead bucket with 3.4 seconds left, and the visitors would go on to eke out the one-point win as the home team could not execute on the other end.
Ross finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and a whopping 6 steals for Guam, who finished the Second Round as the only unbeaten team (5-0).
Top-scoring for Coach EJ Calvo's team was Jonathan Galloway, who registered a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds with 2 blocls.
Tai Wesley finished with a full line of 20 points, 6 boards, 3 dimes, 2 steals, and 2 blocks, as Jericho Cruz added 14 markers and a pair of steals.
Put to naught by the stinging defeat was the well-deployed attack of Mongolia, spearheaded by Anand Ariunbold as he made 17 points.
Tungalag had 15 points, while Enkhbaatar Onolbaatar and Ulzii Orshikh Myagmarsuren added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Blue Wolves in an encounter that pitted two of the eight teams bound for the Asia Cup Qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Thailand didn't show any sign of slowing down despite reaching the ACQ after mauling Singapore. 78-60, in the penultimate game of the day.
Tyler Lamb led the way once more with 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Moses Morgan provided 14 markers, 4 boards, and 4 dimes.
The two combined for 23 points in the first half, where they nearly matched their foes' output as the long-time teammates powered the Thais to a commanding 42-35 advantage at the half that set the tone for the dominant conquest.

China breaks ground on world’s largest green hydrogen project www.rt.com

China has begun construction of a large-scale green hydrogen project that will use solar and wind power in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, according to Sinopec Group, the country’s biggest oil refiner.
The company expects the project, its second green hydrogen enterprise, to produce 30,000 tons of green hydrogen and 240,000 tons of green oxygen annually.
According to Xu Zhendong, executive director of the Inner Mongolia branch of Sinopec Star Petroleum, the green hydrogen and green oxygen produced there will be transported via pipelines to a pilot coal deep-processing project to replace part of what is produced using the existing coal-to-hydrogen method.
Inner Mongolia is currently one of China’s biggest coal-mining regions but is set to become a renewable energy hub. Although China still relies heavily on its large coal industry, it is hoping to make a gradual transition to renewable alternatives and achieve decarbonization over the coming decades. The country is planning to become carbon neutral by 2060 following a peak in carbon emissions in 2030.
China says it can now power almost every home with clean energy
Hydrogen is considered green since it is produced from renewables, such as solar and wind sources, and does not result in carbon dioxide emissions.
After becoming fully operational, the project is expected to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by some 1.43 million tons. That is equivalent to planting around 825,000 trees, according to Xu.
China is the world’s largest producer of hydrogen, though most of it is currently produced from coal. The country’s annual output is expected to reach up to 200,000 tons of hydrogen – thanks to renewables – in order to cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to two million tons by 2025.

Magical run continues as Mongolia reach Asia Cup Qualifiers with beatdown of Singapore www.fiba.basketball

Mongolia further solidified their status as a team to watch out for in the region after sealing a place in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers following a 73-49 conquest of Singapore, Saturday night at the UG Arena.
A team that made their FIBA seniors debut only in the Pre-Qualifiers' First Round last November, the Blue Wolves have now become the seventh nation to enter the ACQ after submitting their most impressive performance to date.
Mongolia (3-1) are now the third team from Group F to make it to the next stage after Guam and Thailand, meaning that only one ticket is up for grabs.
Game heroes: All but two scored in the lopsided victory, with Delgernyam Davaasambuu leading the way with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
Battur Ganbold supplied 13 points while Enkhbaatar Onolbaatar finished with a double-double of 12 markers and 14 boards.
Turning point: Davaasambuu scored 10 in the opening period alone, where he presided over the home team's 18-4 start. He would go on to outscore the entire opposition as the quarter ended 26-8 in their favor.
That then proved to be the beginning of a one-sided show much to the delight of the appreciate crowd, who saw their bets lead by as many as 35 points, 45-10, following Tommy Bilguun's triple with under five minutes left in the second period.
Stats don't lie: In easily one of the most lopsided results of the ongoing Pre-Qualifiers, Mongolia shot 47-percent from the field thanks to their 25 assists, an output that's now the third-most in the tournament.
And aside from ruling the boards, 47-35, the Blue Wolves' bench truly made a difference as they outscored their counterparts, 52-34.
